Also mineral based oil is best for front forks which is what thier standard front fork oil is. They said to use thier standard front fork oil. That is why it is not suitable for front fork use where foaming can be an issue. The HVI racing formula has less or no anti-foaming additive. So it would have been easier if i could have found an answer.I checked with BelRay and they said the HVI is synthetic and also since rear shocks are gas charged foaming is not an issue. My problem is i find my XR1200 front end too harsh so i wanted to try some thinner oil, but i have to remove and dismantle the fork legs to drain the oil. I only came across this thread because i am searching the net to try and find out what weight HD fork oils are. Nice post, and makes sense to start in the middle and work it out for yourself :clap I am going to get the fork caps with the hole in the top. I guess since fork oils start at about 5w and go to 30w I will just start with some 15w, right in the middle if I dont like it I'll try something else. Even the different motorcycle makers that use Showa forks Honda, Ducati Harley can't agree. There are so many conflicting opinions that it's funny 5w, 10w, 15w, 20w even the people puttig the stuff in the bottles can't seem to agree on just what Type E is, Amsoil says one thing and Bel-Ray says another. I dont think anyone has a good answer for this question. So there you have it right from the Harley oil container sold at the Yamaha shop. On the back of the container, in about five different languages, it said that Type B was 5 wt., Type E was 10 wt., and Heavy Duty was 20 wt. oil and on the front of the container it said: 'Harley Davidson Type B'.

We went to look at the oil and he handed me the 5 wt. I went to check around at other brand shops to see what they had for oil and right next door at the Yamaha shop they said they had 3, 5, & 10 wt. No one back there knew either so I left without buying oil.
